Rivervale Veterinary Clinic has recently bought some state of the art dental equipment. We have a new quiet compressor and efficient gas turbine air drills, as well as a new ultrasonic dental scaler and a new teeth polisher. All of this means we can provide better dental care of your pets and reduce the length of time they spend under a general anaesthetic.
Is your pet's breath not quite as healthy as it used to be? Is there a lot of tartar on your pet's teeth? If you would like your pet to have a dental check up please bring your pet in to see us during surgery hours. If no dental treatment is required, and there are no other problems to discuss or other treatments to give and you come during surgery hours, we will not charge you for checking your pet's teeth. Most pets continue to eat even if they have acute tooth ache.
Lots of people tell us how much brighter their pet is after having a dental treatment and we have come to realise just how common dental problems are in pets. You can also contact the nursing staff for advice on the care of your pet's teeth.
Traditionally, pets have had their temperatures taken by inserting rectal thermometers. We are sure some pets wish there was another way of taking their temperature! Well, now there is another way! We can implant your pet just once in its lifetime with a Biotherm microchip. Then when we want to read your pet's temperature all we have to do is scan your pet in the consulting room. Painless! Cats in particular may appreciate being implanted with a Biotherm microchip! Each microchip also carries a unique number and your details and this unique number can be registered on a central computer (if you move or change telephone number the details held can be changed), then if your pet becomes lost you have a much better chance of being united again. Vets and the RSPCA almost always routinely scan new pets they see. A microchip is also a good way of proving your pet belongs to you. It's not unusual for some people to put food out for cats believing they are strays. Sometimes if the cats accept the food (and we do know that some cats do the "rounds", stopping at several places for food each day!) the people putting out the food "adopt" them as their own. If we scan a new pet we can tell them the pet already has an owner and we can reunite pet and owner together again. Microchips are normally implanted at the time of a puppy or kitten's second vaccination, but we can also implant a pet at any time in its life after this as well. With the introduction of Biotherm microchips there will be a special introductory offer on the price. Please telephone us for details (0117 951 9048).
Rivervale Veterinary Clinic has spent a five figure sum on purchasing a new diagnostic ultrasound machine and special probes to use with it. We can now take a better look at your pet's internal organs when we need to make a diagnosis. Ultrasound compliments X ray pictures as different structures can show up better on one or other technique, and together we have a better overall picture of what is happening internally. Ultrasound is also useful for pregnancy diagnosis. To see a row of puppies of kittens and all their hearts beating is always reassuring.
One treatment we sometimes use for older dogs with arthritis is Chondroitin and Glucosamine capsules. We now have available a new senior dog food that already contains Chondroitin and Glucosamine. One of our patients has already tried it and it appears to have helped her arthritis. We have free samples of this food available at reception.
